Update on tickets for 41st and Home CD Release Show

Copperspine has sold out its allocation of tickets for the 41st and Home CD Release show, so we're had to close our ticket sales page. Many thanks to everyone who bought tickets through Copperspine. Tickets may still be available at Redcat Records, but Zulu Records is sold out. We've been told that there will be no tickets on sale at the door.

Congratulations to Portico, who are on the shortlist for two of CBC Radio 3's Bucky Awards. The winners are decided by your votes, and you can vote once in each category each day until midnight on Sunday (November 8th).

Here's how you vote. Click on this link (radio3.cbc.ca) to the CBC site. Then become a member (via the link on the left) or login if you already are a member. Then find the Bucky Award area over on the right, and go to the most canadian song and best lyrics sections to vote for Portico. Then repeat again tomorrow, and the next day.

Copperspine Showcase This Week

I think the poster pretty much says it all. Little Mountain is just off Main at 195 East 26th Avenue. This will be a great (if somewhat chaotic) evening.

August 12

Jesse Matheson Pounds You Again

Yes, Jesse's Pleasure Pounds is getting a relaunch. After having tracks picked twice as Song of the Day on CBC Radio 3, it's time to give this album the attention it deserves.

Have a look at some of the reviews: Raised on Indie, Slowcoustic and Citizen Dick (that last one is the reviewer, not a quote from the review, by the way).

Tour dates are coming, but if you read this early enough, you can catch Jesse playing at Vancouver's Olio Festival this Friday night. The show is at Woods, which is the former No Tofu Studios at 7 West 2nd Avenue. Jesse is on at 10:30, and The Magician and the Shilohs are also on the bill.

Free Copperspine Sampler Available from Kerf

The fine folks at Kerf Music now have a 9-track Copperspine Sampler available free for download on their site. Please give our page at Kerf a visit HERE, register and download the album ... and then have a look around the rest of the Kerf site because there's a lot of other great music available there.

And don't forget the Tuck CD Release Show this Thursday (21st May) at the Media Club. Look right below for details.

More CD Release Shows Coming Up

Two dates to mark in your calendar in May and June. Both are sort-of CD Release Shows, and both will be great.

First up is a show to mark the belated official release of Lullabies and Other Lies by our good friends in Tuck. If you knew where to look, you could have grabbed a copy of this album for a while now. I did, and I love it. You should, and you will too. Whatever you do, go to this show, which is at the Media Club on 21st May, with a great lineup of other bands (Gentle Infidels, Pawnshop Diamond and Language Arts) on the bill too. And if you want to hear the album in advance, you can buy it right here, or via links on the Tuck Myspace page.

Looking further ahead to 12th June, there's a (pre-)release show for the Abramson Singers CD at St. James Hall. The CD won't actually be out then, but you'll be able to get a pre-release copy of the recordings ... and enjoy a fine show. And it will be a CD Release Show - yes, a real one - for Corbin Murdoch and the Nautical Miles.

Save CBC and Radio 3 in particular

Jesse Matheson was CBC New Music Canada Track of the Day again this last Thursday, this time with The French Song. CBC obviously needs saving! CBC's request for a bridge loan to cover its budget shortfall this year has not been granted by our government, and so services are under threat. As anyone with any interest in independent Canadian music knows, the CBC and Radio 3 in particular has been an essential outlet for that music. If you want to make your voice heard on this issue, please sign up at one of the online petitions. You can find one in support of CBC Radio 3 here and one for CBC and Radio Canada as a whole here

Tours and Reviews

Portico and Sarah MacDougall are both heading out on tour in the next week of so. Portico are doing a string of dates across Western Canada, and Sarah's off to Europe for a load of shows in Scandanavia and the UK. All show dates can be found on the Shows page. Meanwhile, they're both picking up plenty of great reviews. Click here to see some reviews of Sarah's Across the Atlantic and here to read reviews of Portico's First Neighbours.

And don't forget to download a copy of the Pender EPs. See the news item right underneath this one for the link.

New Pender EPs Available Now ... Here

Sadly, these are probably Pender's final recordings, but they are yours to enjoy now from our Downloads page. There are two 4-song EPs entitled Divorce recorded last Fall, and Chris has kindly made them available for the first time through this site. Full recording information and artwork is provided, along with the mp3s.

CD Release Shows

Fresh off a wonderful CD Release Show for Portico last Friday, we now have another one to look forward to next Thursday. That's Sarah's Vancouver CD Release Show with Dyad on the 26th at the WISE Hall. I saw Sarah and her band play just a couple of weeks ago, and this is going to be another great double-bill. And just in case you can't read all the details in the poster below, that's Doors at 7:30, Show at 8:00, and you don't want to be late or you'll miss Dyad. Now we have to get working to get that bathtub transported to the WISE Hall for the show.

February 18

Portico's First Neighbours Out This Week, and they're on the CBC Radio3 Podcast too

A session from Portico can be found on this week's CBC Radio 3 podcast, and it's also available streaming on the CBC website. There are terrific reviews already coming in for the new CD. Just have a look at these links: Herohill, Americana UK, FFWD, Whisperin and Hollerin. You can buy the CD online now from Portico's website, or direct from Copperspine's Store, and the recording is also available as a digital download from Kerf Music. Even better, come along to the CD Release Show on the 20th at the End Cafe on Commercial Drive in Vancouver.

And when you stagger out dazed from that show, you can start walking slowly North. Take your time, enjoy the views around Grandview Park, and if you pace yourself right you'll get to the WISE Hall just in time for Sarah MacDougall's Vancouver CD Release Show with Dyad on the 26th. By the time you come down from the high of that show, Spring will be here!

February 2

Sarah MacDougall's New CD Now Available

Sarah's CD Across the Atlantic is released this week, and can be ordered now from her website, direct from Copperspine's Store, or as a digital download from Kerf Music.

Sarah also plays the first of two BC CD Release Shows this week, at the Fort Cafe in Victoria this Saturday, along with Copperspine's own Roger Dean Young.

New Releases in February !!

We've two exciting new releases coming out in February, and the dates and CD Release Shows are now set.

First up is Across the Atlantic from Sarah MacDougall, which comes out on the 7th, the same day as a CD Release show in Victoria. Later in the month, on the 26th, Sarah has a second CD Release show here in Vancouver.

In between those two dates, on the 17th, Portico put out their third album, First Neighbours, with a CD Release show in Vancouver on the 20th.

The show details are on the shows page. Both albums will be available right here for mailorder or from Kerf as digital releases on or around the official release date.

Copperspine Links Up with Kerf for Digital Downloads

We're very happy to be able to annnounce that we're linking up with Kerf Music to make all of the Copperspine music from the last few years available digitally. We'll also be making a few recordings available through Kerf as Digital Only releases.

Kerf is a great little independent Canadian company, so they pay attention to all the music they make available, and are determined to make sure that you get full quality sound in your downloads. There's a Copperspine page on the Kerf website, and the first batch of Copperspine releases are already available there. Go visit the site by clicking on the logo above (or anything else that looks active on this update). There's a lot of fine music available from other artists at Kerf as well.

Neins Circa CD Release Party

November 2

November Shows Dates and Upcoming Releases

The full Copperspine show listings for this month are now up on the Shows page. Not so many as October, but there are some really good ones. Jesse at the Horseshow Tavern. Sarah at Place des Arts. Roger opening for Priya Thomas. Portico at Richard's. And the biggest Copperspine event of the month: the Neins Circa EP Release at Western Front on november 28th. Hope to see you at all of the shows.

And looking ahead, there are at least a couple of new releases coming in the New Year. Portico's new CD First Neighbours and Sarah MacDougall's first with Copperspine Across the Atlantic are both being lined up for February. Then there are some new Pender recordings in preparation, perhaps as a digital only release. And, we hope, one other new CD. More information soon.

October 26

Neins Circa EP Available Here Now

You can find it now on our online store page.

October 2

October Show Dates

My fingers ache. Check out all the typing I've had to do for this month's Copperspine shows on the Shows page. Tours across Canada by Neins Circa and Sarah MacDougall plus a Berlin show for The Abramson Singers. And if you're in Victoria, don't miss the show this Saturday from CS Rippin and Roger Dean Young, which is a real rarity, and not to be missed.

September 20

Welcome to Sarah MacDougall

We're very happy to be able to announce that Sarah MacDougall's next CD will be coming out on Copperspine early next year. Pre-release copies will be available at her shows in October, and there will be more information about the official release here soon. Sarah's addition to the Copperspine family means that the Shows page has just doubled in size, so look out for her tour with Women in the Round to come to a venue near you soon. Visit Sarah's website and Myspace page to find out more.

September 15

Neins Circa EP

It's almost here, and Neins Circa is touring across Canada to support it.

Tour dates on the Shows page or the band's Myspace page.

August 26

Tour and Recording News

A bit of both for The Neins Circa. There's an EP of new songs coming in September, which will be available here and from the band at its shows across Canada on tour with Young and Sexy. A preliminary schedule of dates can be found on the Shows page.

Two other bands who have been busy recording recently are Portico and Pender. Portico are expecting to release their CD early next year. No dates yet for Pender.

Meanwhile, there have been more additions to the online store page and the downloads page, so please check them out.

August 16

Portico's Wordplay

Take a listen to this week's CBC Radio 3 Podcast, which is a special called Wordplay, and you'll hear Portico's Sincerely. It's included there in the company of Great Lake Swimmers, Luke Doucet and Chad VanGaalen, and rightly so. Next step: Go buy a copy of the CD from Portico's webpage, or right here

August 10

Online Store and Digital Downloads

Many Copperspine CDs can now be bought online through this website, and some music is also available here for download. Just click on the music link at the top, and explore. There's more to come.

August 2

Website Updates

Shows for August and September are now up. There's now a proper Artisans page, so please take a look. The Music page now has a full listing of all Copperpsine full-length releases, and that page will become a real sales page very soon.

July 26

Dyad on CBC, 30th July 8pm

Listen to Dyad in concert on the CBC. Next Wednesday evening, Dyad's performance from last year's Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival will be included in Hour 1 of Canada Live on CBC Radio 2. That's 8pm for local broadcasts in all Canadian Time Zones (except Newfoundland itself, where it will be on at 8.30pm). It's probably also available on the Internet, but I'm not guessing what time zone that will correspond to.

Then, if you're in or near Montreal, go and see Dyad live at the Festival La Grande Rencontre, August 9th and 10th.

June 23

Summer Festivals

  • Portico at Sled Island Festival
  • Dyad at La Grande Rencontre

Two opportunities coming up to see Copperspine artists if you live outside BC. Portico will be playing the Sled Island Festival in Calgary this Thursday. Catch them at the Science Centre at 7pm, where they'll be sharing the stage with Chad Vangaalen. To get a preview, visit Portico's store HERE, or buy digital downloads from Zunior or iTunes.

A bit further away, and a bit longer away, Dyad will be playing Festival La Grande Rencontre in Montreal from 8th to 10th August. This an annual festival of folk an traditional music, and this year's theme is Fiddling for the People, so who better than Dyad to play.
